In civil engineering Portland cement is a complex of umhydrated calcium and aluminium silicates produced by the roasting together of limestone and clay. The limestone was originally obtained from Portland in Dorset when patented in the 19th century to replace quicklime. When mixed with fly ash or ground slag, by products of coal-fire power stations or smelting the composite materia is formed giving stronger hydration, similar to Roman pozzalonic cement which used volcanic ash instead.
