Brand : A name, term, design, symbol or other feature that distinguishes one seller's product from those of others.

 

Brand Name : The same as Brand.

 

Brand Mark: The design element such as symbol, character, logo or anything that provide a recognition to a specified product.

 

Trade Mark : A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol, and/or design that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others. A service mark is a word, phrase, symbol, and/or design that identifies and distinguishes the source of a service rather than goods.

 

Service Mark : Is a trademark used in the United States and several other countries to identify a service rather than a product. When a service mark is federally registered, the standard registration symbol ® or "Reg U.S. Pat & TM Off" may be used (the same symbol is used to mark registered trademarks).

 

Distinguish Brand versus Generic Brand : Mainly used in Drug and medical products and as follows : The difference between a brand-name product and a generic one is designed to be transparent. Once the patent life expires on a brand-name drug product, it is eligible to be made into a "generic drug." To do this, the generic drug manufacturer must ensure that the drug they are producing contains the same active ingredient(s) as the brand-name product, in the same dosage form, at the same dose or concentration, and for the same route of administration (for example, amoxicillin 500 milligram (oral) capsule). The drug may differ in color, shape, taste, inactive ingredients, preservatives and packaging, however. Because of these differences, the generic drug manufacturers are required to submit additional paperwork to the FDA to prove that their product is manufactured in accordance with good manufacturing practices (GMPs), and is as pure and stable as the brand-name product.

A brand (or marque for car model) is a name, term, design, symbol or other feature that distinguishes one seller's product from those of others. Brands are used in business, marketing  and advertising.

In accounting, a brand defined as an intangible asset is often the most valuable asset on a corporation's balance sheet. Brand owners manage their brands carefully to create shareholder value, and brand valuation is an important management technique that ascribes a money value to a brand, and allows marketing investment to be managed (e.g.: prioritized across a portfolio of brands) to maximize shareholder value. Although only acquired brands appear on a company's balance sheet, the notion of putting a value on a brand forces marketing leaders to be focused on long term stewardship of the brand and managing for value.

The word "brand" is often used as a metonym referring to the company that is strongly identified with a brand.

 Brand Name

An arbitrarily adopted name that is given by a manufacturer or merchant to an article or service to distinguish it as produced or sold by that manufacturer or merchant and that may be used and protected as a trademark.

Brand Mark

Brands use visual images, elements or symbols to get themselves identified by their consumers. These are called Brand Marks. Brand marks serve the purposes of contributing to building and maintaining brand’s image.

Trademark

A trademark is a recognizable sign, design, or unique expression related to products or services of a particular source from those of others, although trademarks used to identify services are usually called service marks.

Service Mark

A service mark or service mark is a trademark used in the United States and several other countries to identify a service rather than a product. When a service mark is federally registered, the standard registration symbol ® or "Reg U.S. Pat & TM Off" may be used (the same symbol is used to mark registered trademarks).

A service mark differs from a trademark in that the mark is used on the advertising of the service rather than on the packaging or delivery of the service, since there is generally no "package" to place the mark on, which is the practice for trademarks.

 Distinguish brand versus generic.

Mainly used in Pharmaceutical products.  

Brand Name Drugs

·         Also called “innovator drugs”

·         Initially marketed as new chemical entities

·         First version sold by the innovator manufacturer is known as the Canadian Reference Product

Generic Drugs

·         Copies of brand name drugs

·         Produced after the original patent expires

Although the active ingredients are the same, the inactive ingredients may differ. This is only important in rare cases when a patient has an allergy or sensitivity to one of the recipients.

The product may also be slightly different in colour, shape, or markings.

The biggest difference is cost. Generic drugs are generally less expensive than brand name comparators.

A brand name identifies a specific product or name of a company. When a brand name is doing its job, it evokes positive images or emotions in consumers, which is why brand can be so valuable. And in some cases, the brand name becomes part of the everyday vernacular such as Kleenex (R) to mean tissue. Because of a brand name's importance, many companies want to protect it through trademark. A trademark is a registered brand or trade name. It can include any combination of a name, slogan, logo, sounds or colors that identify the company or its products or services. For example, the Nike Swoosh is a registered trademark.

Trademarks and brand names are essentially the same thing. The only difference between the two is that a trademark is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Registration of a brand name as a trademark affords the owner of that trademark legal recourse if someone else uses that name.

Brand, brand name, brand mark, trade mark, service mark

 

 

A brand is something that distinguishes the product offering of one competitor from the product offering of another competitor.  A brand name is the part of a brand that is spoken.  A brand mark is the part of a brand that is visible and identifiable.  A trade mark or service mark is a brand mark that is given legal protection.

 

 

Generic versus branding

 

 

Branding decisions include generic versus a brand, private label versus brand, family versus individual.  Generic brands only state what the product is (e.g., Beer, Paper towels).  Private label brands are available only at certain wholesalers or retailers (e.g., Raley's, Safeway, Save Mart all have their own brands).  Family brand names use the same family name that identifies the marketer (e.g., Kellogg's cereals, Campbell's soups).  Family brands allow new products to be more readily identified but there is risk to the family name if the product fails.  Individual brand names are viewed by the consumer as unique offerings without identifying the marketer (e.g., Procter and Gamble markets Tide, Bold, Cheer, Dash, Ivory Snow).  A failure of a new product is not tied to the marketer's other products but there is a greater investment required to establish the new brand.   Often an organization that uses a family branding strategy will use an individual branding strategy if they launch a product in a new industry outside what the consumer associates the family brand.
