True copy, certified copy and photo copy or xerox copy are the terms often confused by many.

- True copy is the original document.

- Certified copy is the photo copy that is verified by a legal authority.

- Xerox copy is synonym to photo copy. (Xerox being a brand name of photo copier machine).

Literally speaking, a true copy of a document is the copy (photocopy, xerox copy, printed copy, etc.) certified by an authority, with official seal and signature, etc. Certain documents, printed directly from a computer, however, may not require a signature, and the organizations mention it. A xerox copy is just a photocopy from the original document, without any seal or signature. Some organizations require attested (self-attested) xerox copies.

But, there is a metaphorical meaning too, regarding human beings: a true copy is a person exactly the same like someone else, even in habits; while a xerox copy is just a lookalike.

I suppose a true copy is a certified copy of an original document; whereas a xerox copy may be just a copy of an original document without being certified. I do not know - I may not be correct, because you are asking outside my specialities areas!

I agree with brother Bukhari and add that the true copy could also be a certified photocopy of the original.

True copy (or certified copy) of original documents are often needed to make sure that copies submitted are true, exact, complete and unaltered.

XeroxCopy a thing made to be similar or identical to another thing;a copy made by a xerographic

printer.
