Very interesting question. But i simply believe prior to comitting to any work ensure you have a discription of what you will be required to do, than ensure there is a guidline of the work and finally provided you are handling your work obligations and doing all that has been outlined and structured for you then it shouldnt be let the boss give any direction in that way.
further more if you spoke to your boss and described that you were completing all the task that were set out for you i think there would be less of a need to get him communicate in that manner.
