Analytical procedures performed near the end of the audit are intended to corroborate audit evidence obtained during the audit of financial statements to assist the auditor in drawing reasonable conclusions on which to base the auditor's opinion.

So the auditor should design and perform analytical procedures near the end of the audit that assist the auditor when forming an overall conclusion about whether the financial statements are consistent with the auditor's understanding of the entity.
