Dear Amr Mahdy

Let us first consider what great philosophers and management gurus have stated about success.

Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.Henry Ford

To succeed in life, you need two things: ignorance and confidence.Mark Twain

Action is the foundational key to all success.Pablo Picasso

The successful person places more attention on doing the right thing rather than doing things right. Peter Drucker

While analyzing what is success for a skilled employee it is worthwhile to note that , skilled and engaged employees are the key to the success of an organization. Skilled workers drive business growth.

A skilled employee is any employee who has some special skillknowledge, or (usually acquired) ability in their work. A skilled employee may have attended a collegeuniversity or technical school. Or, a skilled employee may have learned their skills on the job.

So what is success to a skilled employee?

Success for a skilled employee could be, to be able to consistently apply those skills towards attaining a set goal and growth objectives.

Success could be that he or she is able to meet the job requirements, actually executing the job well and get remunerated. Success for such a person could be to get due recognition for that contribution made and to be able to meet organizational, personal family and societal obligations.

A skilled employee’s passion or the lack of it determines whether she or he will achieve success or not. Most people don’t have preexisting passions that can be easily matched to their work. And for those who do enjoy such passion, there’s little evidence that building a career around it will lead to satisfaction and success. If one wants love and be successful what one does, first one needs to focus on becoming exceptional at a rare and valuable skill, then leverage this value to gain autonomy, recognition, creativity and finally to make a lasting impact.

Success for individuals differ. The intent behind the effort may have an influence on the outcome- a success or failure. Success may mean different  things for different skilled employees. For one success may mean achieving simplicity. For another it may mean attaining power and influence.

An employee may be skilled but the following could be the barriers to achieving success;

1. Poor attitude. For most of us, attitude is the biggest determinant of the kind of results we produce in our world. Our attitude determines what we do, which determines what we create. Many people sabotage their ability with their stinky attitude and their toxic self-talk.

2. Apathy and laziness. Some people just don’t wanna do what it takes. Sadly, we are the short-cut society and the quick-fix generation. Results without effort; that’s what we want. Good luck with that.

3. Fear. A certain level of fear is normal. Healthy even. Being controlled by fear, not so good. At all.

4. Procrastination. Always about to start something amazing. Sure. For too many of us it’s always soon, never now. Your life is not a dress-rehearsal for the real thing.

5. Poor planning. Knowing where you want to go is one thing. Strategic planning and implementation of that plan is another thing. All the discipline, self-control and motivation won’t produce optimal results unless they are attached to a practical plan.

6. Over-thinking. Analysis paralysis.

7. Lack of discipline and self control. Back in the old days these attributes proved to be quite effective. Apparently they still work.

8. We don’t finish stuff. Sure I could be more technical, but do I really need to be?

9. We invest our emotional energy in the wrong place; jealousy, resentment, anger, greed, bitterness, etc. We waste what we’ve got. We hold on to crap and make ourselves ugly and unproductive.

10. Poor communication. Too many of us don’t master (or even work at) life’s most important skill. If you can’t create connection, rapport and mutual understanding with the people in your world, you better learn Quickly.

11. We lack clarity. We know we want success… we just don’t know what that is! If you can’t define it, you can’t have it. When we get clarity we create excitement and momentum and we start to produce better results in our world.

12. Self doubt. If there’s a way to shoot ourselves in the foot with a really big self-doubt gun, we’ll find it. Perhaps we should stop that?

I sincerely hope , my answer is as per your expectations. Please feel free to revert  with your comments or observations if any.

When the employee is filling his position properly, and focusing on his career and worked and will work hard for improvement, I call him successful

The successful employee always has something to add, and the company could always count on him when it comes to his specialty.

There is a common mistake that the successful skilled employee has a high Salary, no it does not work this way.  Yes they will make good bucks in the future but they should be successful first and accept less pay to get the job they are looking for. Career success is not a moment it is years of hard work, and it is how you have passed the up and down in your career to reach your goal. And you may have not reached your goal yet, but you are successful as long as you are working on it and on the right path.
