Can you recommend any good alternative to SharePoint for small companies?

it depends on what is your needs, SharePoint is a platform and work as infrastructure, for example, it can work as a portal as secure access to your company resources like projects, documents, an online portal ...etc 

so the alternatives are 

1- google for work  : if you look for email,  simultaneous document editing, chat, conference, scheduling

2- Huddle : it is good for team collaboration, project management,

3- box for business

4- confluence

5- there are others but no time to list it.

You could give ExoPlatform a try. It's open source, they have a community edition which is free but unsupported, you can play with it and see if it suits your needs. If you do decide to work with it they also have the Enterprise edition which comes with support provided should you decide to deploy it.

It depends on what you want from sharepoint. sharepoint is a framework and it's programmable. for just workflow or file managing and cooperation or meetings you can check cisco WebEx or Trello and dropbox and use it simultaneously .
