How should one behave in a company environment?
I'll be honest here, there is nothing more irritating than an over-confident new recruit. There is something about them that is guaranteed to annoy the current incumbents of the workplace.
So, my first words of advice would be, be humble. It doesn't matter if you are the most knowledgeable person on the planet, if you enter the workplace with the attitude that you are the bees knees (English expression for an amazing individual) you will rub everyone up the wrong way (English expression for 'piss people off')
Take your lead from the people already working there. There will be an element of when in Rome, do as the Romans do - basically, act as they do.
How to make this an enriching experience in terms of knowledge gain?
Observe, ask questions, do your research.
On my first day in the Emergency Department a few years ago, a patient came in who had suffered a traumatic amputation after a car accident. At that time, I knew nothing about 'shock' or about reattachment of limbs. My awareness of pain control and anaesthesia was minimal.
I went home and made notes in my little book. I did my research, I read books, I asked questions, I went to lectures. I learnt.
I still ask questions. If I don't know something, I make it my mission to find out.
There will always be something to learn.
Additionally, people usually like to share. They will be pleased to share it with you. But be sensible, show that you have acquired some knowledge, and know when to shut up.
How to be friends with colleagues?
This is more tough. We can't like all of the people all of the time. And they won't all like you.
Don't try too hard. There is something suspicious about people who try to fit in too early in the game.
I remember going for a night out with colleagues a couple of years ago, we had discussed the arrangements quietly, we were stunned to spot one of the new staff standing outside the venue - she had overheard our private conversation and invited herself along.
Generally speaking, just be pleasant, be yourself, be interested in them and the friendships will come.
How to balance work-life
You have to figure out WHY you work. Is it to be a high-flyer or are you satisfied with happiness and a reasonable salary? The answer will dictate the way you can balance things. Many of the most successful individuals have dedicated an inordinate amount of effort to their career. Are you prepared for that?
My view now is that I work to live, rather than live to work. But it's taken me a while to reach that conclusion, a long while and heartache along the way.
That doesn't mean that I'm not bloody good at what I do. I was told last week that a lecture I gave was 'the best someone had ever seen'. But I still have time to spend doing the things that I love - cycling and walking and being with my loved ones.
What advice would I have liked?
You are only young once. Enjoy your life. Look for new opportunities. Try your hardest, but don't make the pursuit of financial gain your only motivation.
