I will be answering on a business perspective, GIS technology has been dominating a lot of services that business provide. The latest trends for the past couple of years is adding the location aspect to any service that a company produces. This makes it easier for the user understand the tool, take decisions easily.
I think nowadays it's important for Computer/IT engineers to understand the domain of GIS as it is part of IT specially if you want to grow in your field and enhance your skills. As nowadays location matters.
