What do this formula "=B4*B5" do in Excel?

In this example the formula multiplies the contents of cell B4 times the contents of cell B5. Referring to the image to the right, our example is arranged in the following manner: cell B4 holds the cost of a car B5 contains the tax rate the formula in cell B6calculates the amount of tax that will be paid for this car. By using cell references in the formula you can change the the values in cells B4 and B5 without affecting the formula. By simply changing the value in cell B4, the answer to your formula will change accordingly in cell B6.

the formula = B4*B5 multiplies the contents of Cell B4 with contents of cell B5. If any value in B4 or B5 changes the result in B6 will change automatically.

Since this example refers to a vehicle purchase price as well as the amount of tax taxable on the vehicle, the formula will not be a simple example of multiplication. Since tax is a percentage of a value, you are effectively calculating18% OF the value entered in B4. Effectively your formula (without percentages) will be: =B4*B5/100.

So in order to have the same accurate calculation in B6 with the formula =B4*B5, you need to ensure that your cell properties of B5 is configured as a Percentage and not a number or general value. You can do this bt right-clicking on cell B5 and then clicking on Format Cells, Under the Number tab, ensure that you select Percentage value and adjust your decimal places accordingly. You might have to re-enter the value in cell B5.

If you are using autofill handlers, you will need to use an absolute cell reference on cell B5 in your formula in cell B6. Since the tax amount will always remain the same, you need to prevent your fomula from using an auto-filled value in the corresponding cell which is incremented by +1 in each following cell.

For example: If row4 was filled with various car prices and cell B5 had your tax value. You could enter the formula: =B4*$B$5 in cell B6 and simply use the auto-fill handler to calculate the tax amount for each vehicle price entered in row4 in the corresponding cell in row6
