Not just as an after-sales damage-controlling tactic, or a customer retention strategy, but as a marketing technique too, there is absolutely no alternative to a robust Customer Support system.
Think like this: Customers are, without a doubt, the very focal point of an E-commerce venture; and Customer Satisfaction being the intention - so, Customer Support has to be the modus operandi.
Whether it’s a product that didn’t ship on time, or the merchandise that was found damaged on receipt - with an effective support system in place, you can increase your chances of redeeming the situation manifold.
So, you definitely need a robust Cusomter Support system in place. There is absolutely no way, you can ignore this part of running your business, and expect to have happy cusomers. And there is no successful venture without happy customers.
Customer Service is a whole domain of services that are developed to improve customer satisfaction in the given business or industry. Whether the customer service is done live, via telephone, live chat, or automated responses really depends upon what service you are delivering and how varied the answers can be.
Personally I think most people would rather speak to a person who speaks their language verse someone from a different country or a computer. The more delicate the business the more likely it needs to be a person.
Frustration with "customer service" programs and people will drive people away if done wrong.

without good customer service u will have no customers to retain but if u have a good customer service technology will be very important
