Both standards cover essentially the same topics. However, ISO 14001:2015 will be based on Annex SL – the new high level structure (HLS) that brings a common framework to all management systems. Some concepts have been updated such as Context of the organization, Issues, Interested parties, Leadership, Risk associated with threats and opportunities, compliance obligations(replaces the phrase “legal requirements”), Environmental objectives and planning to achieve them, Communication, Documented Information (replaces documents and records),operational planning and control, performance evaluation, evaluation of compliance, Nonconformity and corrective action, Management review, etc.,

The biggest difference between the old and the new standard is the structure.

The new ISO 14001: 2015 ?2016 is more closely aligned with ISO 31000 (risk management) in such it is more structured about understanding the potential impacts the operational risks can have.

e.g.

Context of the organization (more scope to personalise the system to the organisation impacts) The organization will need to have a greater understanding of the important issues that can affect, positively or negatively the way it manages it’s environmental responsibilities.

Issues or aspects (you will need to assess all the potential impacts they can be internal or external, positive or negative and include environmental conditions)

Interested parties / Stakeholders engagement (a lot more detail is included about considering their needs and expectations, then deciding whether to adopt any of them as compliance obligations)

Leadership Responsibilities (Requirements specific to top management and people in leadership roles needs to be carefully defined)

Risk associated with threats and opportunities (The context of the organization provides the framework for the evaluation of risks associated with threats and opportunities)

Risks and opportunities, Context of the organization, and Interested parties are new requirements that need to be met in this new version
