The Administrative Assistant to the Vice President provides complex administrative assistant services as the direct support to the Vice President and the coordination of the day-to-day operations and special projects of the office of a Vice President. This classification requires thorough knowledge of a specialized administrative wing and College organization, operations, policies and procedures.

Secretary of State is generally considered the most prestigious, with Secretary of Treasury / Defense also up there. Having said this, the Secretary of State job can be less exciting / powerful if the White House has super-strong control over foreign policy. So this somewhat varies by situation / administration. In some administrations, the National Security Advisor is more powerful than the Secretary of State — so let’s add that position to the list as well.

The White House Chief of Staff is generally extraordinarily powerful — it’s often the second most powerful job in the entire Executive Branch, especially early in a president’s administration.

One telling story from history is that in Reagan’s second term, the White House Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Treasury traded jobs — which gives you a sense of how good the Chief of Staff job is.

The Attorney General is prestigious but generally not as important as the other jobs above. Also, my impression is that the Attorney General is usually not in the core flow of priority stuff — not economic stuff, not foreign policy stuff.

Other than those roles, nothing is close.
