No.  You do not need a previous 'failure' in order to have a success:  having a failure does not imply that the next excercise will be a success. 

Unless  you have understood correctly why the failure occurred, the next attempt is likely to be a failure as well.

It's usually unhelpful to label things as 'failures'.  It's usually better to consider them as experiences from which you can learn.
