You need to draw the reader in by taking that person to space and time where your event is happening. Whether it is a fiction piece or a non-fiction one the best way to attract the reader is to describe the every other aspect of that event in detail. For example, if the event is a ballroom dance, the writers should describe the location whether it is indoor or outdoor; if it is indoor describe the interior of the hall/dance floor, the shapes, and sizes of chandeliers; if it is outdoor describe the time of the day what is in the sky (the sun, birds, clouds, stars, the moon) and how it complemented the things on the ground like the flower arrangement. A detailed and articulately written description of the attire of the guests and hosts, the fragrances (perfumes) and the music is also essential.
Though your stories are fictional, the best way to enhance the atmosphere within your piece was the well established connection of a reader to the story. Put yourself to the shoes of the reader, if you would be reading the story you are making, would you connect to it? Is there any impact in your side? or if that story will touch the reader? You have to consider those things and the readers who will read your story.
