An IT professional is ideally suited to build a career in project management as he learns to approach each problem in steps according to the SDLC or in a Agile method.
This puts him at an advantage when moving to project management.
The first step he has to ensure is that all the small tasks he does in the capacity of a leader while working is ratified and endorsed by a superior this can be as a casual email or as a testimonial.
This is the first and foremost step to take as good project management programs ask for these endorsements and often the important tasks completed are quickly forgotten as career progresses.
Here I was referring to the PMP which requires at least a
Four-year degree, 4500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education
In the absence of a Four-year degree the hours increase to 7500.
This is where all those endorsements will come in handy because you will be able to document it and submit it to the board at time of certification.
There are other certification options like PRINCE and Six Sima but they hold more true for Quality processes.
