There are two optimum approaches for a Doctor to improve his career in Project Management.

The two ways to attain a valuable certification properly is either through the American Association of Physician Leadership - they offer a Project management program through the Carnegie Mellon faculty and is a program that offers 4 CME credits.
The second option is to go for a PMP from PMI.
Both options are valuable and will enhance career prospects. It depends on the need of the Physician. If he intends to do a full time project management role PMP is the way to go.
If he intends to do maybe 4-8 hours of project management a week then the PMP is simply overkill and AAPL's program will more than suffice - it is also a more cost effective route.
