An XPS document is any file that is saved to the XML Paper Specification or .xps file format
If you are creating a document for others you can make them readable and not editable, or you can make them readable and editable. If you want a document to be readable but not editable, save the document as a PDF or XPS file, or save it as a Web page.
1- XML Paper Specification (XPS) XPS is a platform-independent technology and open specification for a page description language that preserves document formatting and enables file sharing and archiving memos, contracts, reports, webpages, online receipts, or anything else you routinely print and save.
2- The XPS document format consists of structured XML markup that defines the layout of a document and the visual appearance of each page, along with rendering rules for distributing, archiving, rendering, processing and printing the documents.
3- XPS embeds all fonts in the file so they appear as intended, regardless of whether the specified font is available on the recipient's computer, and has more precise image and color rendering on the recipient's computer than PDF.
4- XPS file is, in fact, a Unicoded ZIP archive using the Open Packaging Conventions, containing the files which make up the document. These include an XML markup file for each page, text, embedded fonts, raster images,2D vector graphics, as well as the digital rights management information. The contents of an XPS file can be examined simply by opening it in an application which supports ZIP files.
5- XPS also supports HD Photo images natively for raster images. It is used in the spool file represents advanced graphics effects such as3D images, glow effects, and gradients as Windows Presentation Foundation primitives, which are processed by the printer drivers without rasterisation, preventing rendering artifacts and reducing computational load.
6- By using Microsoft Office2010 programs, you can convert files into PDF or XPS formats without needing additional software or add-ins, like resumes, legal documents, newsletters, files intended to only be read and printed, documents intended for professional printing.
7- You can create XPS documents in virtually any program, simply by selecting the Microsoft XPS Document Writeras your printer—no extra software is needed. The XPS version will look exactly like the original
8- Because you don't need the original programs to open XPS documents, they're easily shared. They're also searchable with Windows Search—no more rifling through stacks of papers to find what you're looking for (or losing important documents in the shuffle.
9- XPS is supported on several versions of Windows: Because the printing architecture of Windows Vista uses XPS as the spooler format, it has native support for generating and reading XPS documents.
n When you click on an XPS document, it opens in the XPS Viewer, where you can search for a word or phrase, or leaf through long documents using the thumbnail view.
n XPS documents can be created by printing to the virtual XPS printer driver. The XPS Viewer is installed by default in Windows Vista, Windows7, and Windows8.
n The viewer is hosted within Internet Explorer (IE) in Windows Vista, but is a native application in7 and8 which supports digital signatures. Windows8 also has a Reader application that reads XPS, OXPS, and PDF files.
n The IE-hosted XPS viewer and the XPS Document Writer are also available to Windows XP users when they download the .NET Framework3.0. The IE-hosted viewer supports digital rights management and digital signatures.
n Users who do not wish to view XPS documents in the browser can download the XPS Essentials Pack, which includes a standalone viewer and the XPS Document Writer. The XPS Essentials Packis available for Windows XP, Windows Server2003, and Windows Vista
n The XPS Essentials Packalso includes providers to enable the IPreview and I-Filter capabilities used by Windows Desktop Search, as well as shell handlers to enable thumbnail views and file properties for XPS documents in Windows Explorer.
n Installing this pack enables operating systems prior to Windows Vista to use the XPS print spooler instead of the GDIbased WinPrint, which can produce better quality prints for printers that support XPS in hardware (directly consume the format).

= g= XPS Annotatoris a standalone XPS Viewer which can digitally sign and annotate XPS documents, show digital signatures and convert XPS documents to common picture formats.
It is used for viewing files saved in the .xps format. xps fies are part of the open XML paper specifications [a technology developed by Microsoft to create a fixed-document format, like an alternative to PDF].
You can create XPS documents (.xps files) by using any program that you can print from in Windows, you can view XPS documents only by using the XPS Viewer.
Note: The XPS Viewer is included with .NET Framework3.0
If you don’t have .NET Framework3.0 installed on Windows Vista, or if you have Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, orWindows Server 2008, you can go online to download it from the Microsoft Download Center.
Hi YASEEN !
An XPS document is any file that is saved in the XML Paper Specification, or .xps, file format. You can create XPS documents (.xps files) by using any program that you can print from in Windows; however, you can only view XPS documents by using an XPS Viewer, such as the one included in this version of Windows.
When you click an XPS document, it opens automatically in the XPS Viewer. There are several options for viewing and managing XPS documents in the XPS Viewer, including:
Saving a copy of an XPS document to your computer
Searching the document for a word or phrase
Zooming in or out to make text and pictures easier to read
Digitally signing the XPS document
Determining who can access the document and for how long by applying document permissions
THANK YOU !
