The retention time in a separator is time period for well effluent takes from entring sperator inlet to flow out from separator out-let and determined by dividing the liquid volume inside the vessel by the liquid flow rate. The retention time usually varies between 30 seconds and 3 minutes.

The amount of time a liquid stays in a vessel . The retention time assures that equilibrium between the liquid and gas has been reached at separator pressure . The retention time in a separator is determined by dividing the liquid volume inside the vessel by the liquid flow rate. The retention time is usually varies between 30 seconds and 3 minutes . If a foaming crude is present the retention time could be increased by four times its normal values.

Retention time (RT) is a measure of the time taken for a solute to pass through a chromatography column. It is calculated as the time from injection to detection. The RT for a compound is not fixed as many factors can influence it even if the same GC and column are used. These include: The gas flow rate.
