When I was Facilities and Administration Manager of a Canadian BPO company, I was responsible for engineering, housekeeping, medical services, reception, security, transport, utilities, and logistics. I was managing two sites of more than 20,000 square meters each. My department was audited yearly for our compliance to the Payment Card Industry-Data Security Standard or PCI-DSS under the category of physical security since it is under my unit. I had to understand how the network infrastructure was designed, how the LAN and WAN were connected, how the network cabling was designed, how the rack type servers are organized, how mobile devices communicate, and how the firewall was protecting the network. Although, IT knowledge was not required for my position my 16 years in IT did help me pass the rigorous PCI-DSS audits.
