If budget allows then SAP is the best, otherwise try to find out the best solution with in the available budget.

I see that the best answer here is to list the best practice ERP selection criteria:

- Define your requirements and start with the areas where you have the toughest challenges.

- Prepare an RFP or a similar mechanism to invite vendors to submit thier offers.

- Go through a proof og concept presentations to see how your challenges are expected to be met and make sure to include all your concerned staff.

- Analyze the offers to define the highest price performance one.

- Make sure to include after sales local support in your technical analysis.

- Make sure to include total cost of ownership (TCO) in your financial analysis (software, hardware, networks, training, and avilability of expertise).

- Enlist your management support

First of all, the question is about budget (money and time) that the company is intending to invest.

So, for a medium scale company I would not say SAP. I would rather say Sage, SAP Business One, Navision... The idea is to chose the right/best ERP for the right company's scale and budget.

If I understand you the second part of your question. Your company is specialized in manufacturing. So I would recommend Navision for you, because it has the most powerful manufacturing module in the market (I'm talking about the standard modules without customizations, because more customization means more budget).

So to sum up, there is three points you should keep in mind while casting ERPs: company scale, budget and how the ERP (without customization) can stick with the company's need.
