What is the standard period to save old documents?

It depends on the Standard that an Organisation is subscribed to. But for Quality related document/ record, the minimum should be five years according to API Spec Q1 

It depends on the concept, policy and performance of each company. Also, the kind and value of each kind of documents counts.

I never delete saved files.  If the files are no longer needed I scan them, save them in an external hard drive and compress the files so it won't take much space.

This depends on the scenerio or situation of yours assignd work.you should save it for long time both in hard and soft copy.you can make many copies of it.

Standard period of saving documents would be 4 months and then in Records Management it archives the data for backup purposes.

Standard period to save old documents maximum 20 Years.

However, we can keep files by scanning and saving in a hard drive.

It depends on the type of documents in question and the local regulation in the country, in some countries you have to save some documents for specific period by law.
