Yes it can but in situations where bullying and taking advantage of social relations take place. Also when the team members are so different that they cannot form a cohesive team. The role of the team leader/manager is vital in this case to build trust and bring the team to a common ground. Hands-on tasks and planned teamwork is the solution for this unhealthy atmosphere.

Limited, but sincere social interaction is the key to creating a content staff and an enhanced work environment. Staff retention rates will more than likely be higher, and overall work satisfaction rates will be higher as well.
But interaction must be limited and not exceed a professional level.
