Being a project manager of any project doesn't require one to be the technical in that domain?

Project Managers are nowadays suppose to have technical knowledge too which is wrong perception. Project Manager should be only focused on how the project is going be executed and have trust within his team members.

I agree.

A project is a project. It is more important to build up a widespread knowledge about project management methods, strategies and tools than to know excactly how the technical details are implemented.

Maybe technical knowledge could be an advantage for a project manager. Sure it is easier to communicate with your developers if you have technical knowledge.

But it could also be a disadvantage. I met some project managers with technical knowledge which was not really up to date or not so good as they thaught. And I saw how these people interfered into detailed technical discussions and even tried to advice technical experts. This is not the task of a project manager!

Project  is task completed by functional and technical members together. Project manager (PM)  is responsible for project success on time and within budget. Project Manager  need not be technical expert , It all depends on type of project , Team and teamwork.

Lots of projects are delayed , failed due to technical reasons , to avoid such kind of failures Project manager should  be able to manage and control those projects with the help of technical team members. Handling technical team members is also challenge in itself , if you do not have technical know how.   so PM with technical knowledge is  advisible but not necessary for non technical projects.

It is true that a project manager does not have to be technical expert and it is also true that the prevailing perception about the project manager and expectation of a project manager being a technical expert also is wrong. It is good for the project management domain if employers change their perception. Thanks for the invitation.

Project Manager doesn’t require being technical in that domain because he is responsible to manage entire project right start from planning, execution, monitoring and closure of the project.

Technical responsibilities is taken by technical project manager which is the one part of entire project contents.

Project Manager does not require it to be technically as much as you should be administratively commandeered for a project where he could be a technical official working at his disposal as well as focus on the level of other sections that have a link to the project such as financial, human and other section

Thank you for the invitation. I have a different opinion here. A project manager should always be from a technical domain because Project Management position requires you to be technical-minded and possess technical knowledge. Project management is not only about executing the project rather it is about the project initiation till handover so in between these two extremes, you will MUST require technical knowledge in different stages of the project.

I believe that that project manager should have a minimum of technical knowledge which .

helps him to manage the project but he should be a proficient in management science.

The project manager should assign technical experts to manage the technical issues while his role should be to assign the jobs, monitor the works, and evaluate the progress.

It's a popular myth that a good project manager can work without extra technical expertise.

But in real life you can't see many PMs going from one industry to another. Just because specialization is important.

And yes - a PM doesn't have to be a tech expert, but he has to have a pretty good knowledge of the product's underlying technologies.
