What is the best way to handle a know-it-all manager?

Some managers are overconfident and overdominant who want it done their way, even if their way is wrong.

They assume all decisions are made from the top down. Worse, using an agile methodology, which relies on self-managing teams, may actually be in direct conflict with this type of boss.

In your opinion, what's the best way to handle a manager or business owner that always presumes he/she knows more than their programmers.

Hello,

this case may be obvious in the private business and specially if you are working with the owner directly, being the owner give you the power to know all the details (in the owner opinion) and in reality no one know every or expert in every thing, as a subordinate in this case your duties is provide the necessary help and support to avoid decisions may result in conflicts, and this can be achieved by (always) providing the necessary data and information and to uncover traps, also your voice should be available before, while and after any incorrect decision to pin point the expected traps, taking into consideration the suitable timing and words, it is good to mention that if you have an opinion differ from his it should be discussed privately, to avoid the embarrassment .

Best Regards

At the end of the day, we need to get the job done. Egos just don't matter. The best solution to handle such a boss is to ignore their bossiness and get along with the work you are supposed to deliver. It's that simple!

Based on my experience, I tend to get along with a know-it-all leader. There were times where I pretend to really be amazed by his knowledge and whenever I got the chance to ask him about something really difficult, he'd become surprised because he didn't know the solution to the problem. That's the time I usually suggest to him to ask for solutions from other people because it's clear that he lacks the knowledge on how to solve the problem. Little by little, that person would eventually realize that he has a lot to learn and that acknowledging our lack of understanding of the problem is not a bad thing. Just approach the manager in a friendly way, that's all.. and don't embarrass him.

well in my case ... Writing an comprehensive email to manager usually work . as if your are speaking in front of him doesn't work where as if you are explaining him when he is free is easy to convince him. Make no up-setting comments and making him aware that he is still your manager .. worked for me but certainly it depends how strubben he/she is ..

Here are some tips to deal with such a boss

The most important thing in such cases is patience, you need to be very calm and patient

Deal the boss with huge respect and degnity which he deserves

Concentrate on your work/task/job and make him/her proud by your work.

Do not ever leave a space for conflict or do not argue with him/her without a valid reason or fact.

There may be some places or times where he/she may be wrong but as a good employee and good human do not let him/her to be insulted rather make him/her proud and cover his/her mistakes, this will create a good place in your boss heart.

Thanks

Thanks for invitation,

I do prefer to ask for a meeting with him to discus the issue, (in one-to-one discussion),  in order to be fully aware of his point of view, and explaining with "evidences" my points.

But in case of he is insisting with his opinion after I have presented these evidences, I will documented this via an e-mail.

The best way to handle a know-it-all manager is going all the way with him and moving with the flow.  To be supportive and no conflicts in the work performance area.  Getting along with the manager means also learning his ways and respecting his ego but when you are by yourself with him and over a cup of tea, discuss the ways in which a better outcome could be achieved and ask for his comments.  In-order to do this you have to gain rapport with the manager and be a happy person to expect some comments that may hurt you.  But in the wider perspective, He has an overall idea of what could go wrong if he did it the way he continued to.  Sometimes it may be necessary to allow for time and intuition in this aspect of the person.  At the end of the day the job is done and that is all that matters because if the organisation favors the person no-one can do anything but just wait your turn and better the results for the company.  the manager may be good in some outcomes and poor in the rest and depending on that ratio the job can be a success.  Be professional at all times in your career and achieve a common goal for the organisation no matter what or who is at the core of the performing levels viz: level 1(tactical co-ordination (2) Level 2 ( Redifining the scope of marketing  (3)  Level 3 (Application of IT) and (4) level 4 (strategic and financial integration.  these are all stages in intefration of marketing communication and skill.

Hi,

The best way to deal with "Know All" Managers is to understand their views as to why they are saying so or doing that or want you to do that? where are they coming from? Prepare for your meeting with data, facts and figures and arguments or points which will make him think from a different perspective. Politely and in a composed manner you have to listen first what they are saying and if you have a counter argument to confront him/ her put it forward substantiating with figures and make them aware that the same is going to benefit them. They will definitely take your point.

so the trick is to thin out of the box and bring in fresh perspectives to any issue.
