Strategy: Long-term planningAs a manager: On the personal level, get rid of the ongoing problems and develop a strategic plan to follow the system of these problems

On practicality: After a well thought out strategic plan, I feel safe about any problem that will come to me in the future and that I can discover the root of this problem

"Strategy is the direction and scope of an organisation over the long-term: which achieves advantage for the organisation through its configuration of resources within a challenging environment, to meet the needs of markets and to fulfil stakeholder expectations".

The manager is responsible to make a strategy work by planning (VMOSA) Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategies and Action Plans for it.  Developing strategies is really a way to focus your efforts and figure out how you're going to get things done. By doing so, you can achieve the following advantages:

  • Taking advantage of resources and emerging opportunities
  • Responding effectively to resistance and barriers
  • A more efficient use of time, energy, and resources

Johnson and Scholes ( Exploring Corporate Strategy) define strategy as follows: "Strategy is the direction and scope of an organisation over the long-term:

A good strategy will take into account existing barriers and resources (people, money, power, materials, etc.). It will also stay with the overall vision, mission, and objectives of the initiative. Often, an initiative will use many different strategies--providing information, enhancing support, removing barriers, providing resources, etc.--to achieve its goals.

Objectives outline the aims of an initiative--what success would look like in achieving the vision and mission. By contrast, strategies suggest paths to take (and how to move along) on the road to success. That is, strategies help you determine how you will realize your vision and objectives through the nitty-gritty world of action.

Review your vision, mission, and objectives to keep you on the right track

It is helpful to review your mission, vision, and objectives to ensure that your strategies are all aligned with the goals expressed in your previous work.

The process of developing strategies with this group so as to better explain the who, what, and why of strategies.  As with the process you went through to write your vision and mission statements and to set your objectives, developing strategies involves brainstorming and talking to members of staff

Developing strategies is the fourth step in the VMOSA (Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategies, and Action Plans) process outlined.   Developing strategies is the essential step between figuring out your objectives and making the changes to reach them.

Strategies should always be formed in advance of taking action, not deciding how to do something after you have done it. Without a clear idea of the how, your group's actions may waste time and effort and fail to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

Strategies should also be updated periodically to meet the needs of a changing environment, including new opportunities and emerging opposition to the group's efforts.

Make sure that your strategies affect the problem or issue as a whole.

Hello,

This is a wide question, and depends on the manager level, a manager alone can not do or decide or develop the company strategy, this effort should be excel by all key persons in the organization, However, there are three level of strategies the corporate, business, and functional, and all go together, but in general the strategy for me is  is a pattern of resource allocation that enables firms to maintain or improve their performances. A good strategy neutralizes threats, exploits opportunities, capitalizes on strengths and/or fixes weaknesses.

Firstly, you need to know & gain a derailed understanding of what a strategy means, it's dimensions & how it works or what it takes for it to be in place or what it takes for it to work.

Secondly, you need to know & understand the company's vision, mission, goals & objectives and core values because you have to develop the strategy in line with the above factors and ultimately align it with the above factors.

Thirdly, you will have to be in position to know & understand how a strategy is developed, selected, implemented, monitored & evaluated, this is very important for any strategist.

Fourthly, you will have to understand & appreciate that you have been entrusted with an important responsibility thus you have devise all means to ensure that you develop the most suitable & appropriate strategy that will yield results and bring about success in achieving desired goals & objectives.
