Yes, when they offer the same hardware options availabele on laptops, add to that multiple sensors which tablets and iPads are equiped with.

Tablets with keypad are the new version of Laptop.

Apple

• New Mac books & iPad Pro are almost similar in size, computing power.
• Mac books lead in RAM (decent RAM in iPad), full fledged OS, Storage where as iPad Pro lead in Touch Screen, Internet Connectivity

Windows 

• Windows Surface Pro & 2 in 1 Laptops are actually Tablets already replacing the Laptops in the this Segment.
• Microsoft has launched full fledged OS for tablets making pure alternative for the laptop even ahead with Touch Screen, Built-in support for Internet Connectivity.

Google - Android / Chrome 

• Does not have support for full fledged design & development software. Say you can use Photoshop in these platform but not like as compared to laptops

Conclusion

Tablets already became better alternative for Laptops unless you are hard core developer or designer.

I don't think so, at least not yet, while iPads and tablets are mobile and easy to uses, they are still very limited in term of performance compared to laptops.

This will only happen if they could be upgrade in design to which in both software and hardware compatibility in performance as laptops are currently doing.

I would think that every device has its own use. While its trendy now to carry a tablet and ipad about , because of its compartibility, it has its limitations. I am pretty sure laptops will still be a major feature in many homes and offices for years to come
