Viruses bascially infects your computers based upon their nature .. it can infect your systems files .. or rename your documents files.. or self copied them on your folders .... or even delete your important data .. or not the least infect your computer bios as well

A Virus is a code that is written in order to be steathly and perform certain malicious actions. It can do many things like corrupt your system file, over take your computer resources for a third party, install a keylogger, compromise your security and data, hijack your computer, lock your computer (ransomware) and there are so many other things a virus can do. It would make your system very slow and prone to crashes and/or malfunctions.
Always use a realiable anti virus as well as a malware protection program, make sure all the latest system updates are installed in order to close any loop holes or entry points.
The term VIRUS in computer language means self replicating application which can spread by copying itself by getting itself inserted to other documents, programs etc. once the VIRUS file gets executed, it could have harmful effects on the system such as slow down, deleting of files randomly etc.
