What is the distinction between planning and vision?

Vision: the imagination of a target point.

Planning: the way to achieve that target point.

Vision work as strategic plan, while plan could be for today only or for next five years 

Vision is where you want to be after the mission/plan is carried out.

Planning is basically part of the mission, whereas mission is the plan to get to your vision

Planning is the work of something that is actually feasible. The vision is to come to something that can be implemented or not

Vision addresses where you see yourself or your company or organisation in future, drawing a bigger picture of what the future may look like for you or your company or organisation. WHILE

Planning entails developing various scenarios,or perspectives on a specific situation, developing objectives & goals, plotting what to do, devising means of how to achieve the desired situation. 

In a nutshell, you have to embark of planning process while having a vision in place because the plan must be aligned to achieve the vision at hand.

Planning:

A basic management function involving formulation of one or more detailed plans to achieve optimum balance of needs or demands with the available resources.

The planning process :

1- Identifies the goals or objectives to be achieved.

2- Formulates strategies to achieve them.

3- Arranges or creates the means required.

4- Implements, directs, and monitors all steps in their proper sequence. 

Whereas "Vision" Is defined as:

"The articulation of the image, values, direction and goals that will guide the future of the organization. “

Vision is like a dream & it serves as the purpose for the existence of an organisation.Vision is followed by strategic orientations to achieve this goal.Planning   is an after step done basically to achieve the strategic orientation . 

Many organizations today develop a vision statement that answers the question " What do we want to become?"  Developing a vision statement is often considered the first step in strategic planning, preceding even development of a mission statement.
