single phase is line 1 & line 2 w/220 volts ac...while 3 phase is line 1,2,3 - with 230/220volts ac .......single phase motor will start by using a capacito,or capacitor start motor...used for single phase ....while 3phase motor will start w/o capacitor .or will start it self by using of line 1,2,3 or 3 leads motor
