2. Optimized design considering the worse scenario during operation with factor of safety.

Factors to be considered for designing a product depends entirely on what you are designing.
-Generally, we need to find how safe the design is (factor of safety) in terms of loads it is supposed to handle.We need to make the design optimally safer (without adding too much material which contributes to cost of manufacturing and many post manufacturing steps).
-The design should also show integrity when it is operated under different external conditions.
For example, a valve should operate safely under its designed load, but also it should not react with the fluid it is handling and the corrosive external factors like that faced in marine , nuclear or any other oxidizing atmosphere.
So material is chosen accordingly based on its strength and its external factors it is supposed to operate.
-Ergonomics to use is also given importance while designing a product. There are codes and standard to be applied while designing products of industrial application, especially.
Design should be ease to produce, assemble and maintain throughout its life cycle.
