Can we install fire dampers in hvac supply and return ductwork passing through shaft to different floors?

The application is a food processing unit with no fire rated walls.  Any link to support the argument. Please advise

It Depends on the Fire Zone Area, Generally, it has to be installed at every riser for supply, fresh and conditioned air and return duct-like conditioned area return, toilet exhaust it has to be installed, will area like serving from riser to lobby, corridor does not require damper the same fan can act as a 2-speed fan to remove smoke at the time of fire.

Smoke and fire dampers are found in ductwork where the duct passes through a firewall or firecurtain.

Smoke dampers are driven by a motor, referred to as an actuator. A probe connected to the motor is installed in the run of the duct and detects smoke, either in the air which has been extracted from or is being supplied to a room, or elsewhere within the run of the duct. Once smoke is detected, the actuator will automatically close the smoke damper until it is manually re-opened.

Fire dampers can be found in the same places as smoke dampers, depending on the application of the area after the firewall. Unlike smoke dampers, they are not triggered by any electrical system (which is an advantage in case of an electrical failure where the smoke dampers would fail to close). Vertically mounted fire dampers are gravity operated, while horizontal fire dampers are spring powered. A fire damper's most important feature is a mechanical fusible link which is a piece of metal that will melt or break at a specified temperature. This allows the damper to close (either from gravity or spring power), effectively sealing the duct, containing the fire, and blocking the necessary air to burn

No.If it is entering the floor only that place fire damper will be installed.

Refering to NFPA 90A , "Approved fire dampers shall be provided where air ducts penetrate or terminate at openings in walls or partitions required to have a fire resistance rating of 2 hours or more"

Yes, You can use fire damper in shaft horizontally to all floors.Due to Food Processing Facility It is possible to have more fire accident So safe to use but you have to convince the client.

Motorized fire and smoke dampers are to be installed for the supply and return air ducts passing through the shafts to different floors if the same ducts are being used for the fresh air and smoke exhaust during smoke mode.

Fire damper is used for prevnting smokes and fire flames when systems is burnt out

the fire damper closed automaticaly, and smokes never pasees through ducts.

if we consider it in every individual rooms in return duct its helpful but not cost effective.

vertically I think no, we always install fire damper at zones in horizontally position

If the shaft wall is fire rated, the fire dampers should be installed only in the branches passing through the wall.

If the shaft wall is not fire rated, dampers shall be installed at all floor levels.

depends on client or consultant because no need in all the floors.

If the shaft itself (no matter how many floors it is) is already fire compartmented, i.e. fire rated walls and doors all the way, then fire damper is only needed at the top and bottom most floor, plus the wall it penetrates (in and out).
