I would use Four main ways to make rooms seem bigger than what they really are:

1. Use Mirrors:

Mirrors are a great way of adding depth to what previously is a small room. They provide the illusion of a space, and they do that very well. When used to cover a wide area, they seemingly extend the room and basically double it in size.

2. Use Bright Colors:

Just like mirrors, bright colors do a great job in increasing the space perception, especially if the bright color is a plain non-patterned surface that covers a large area.

3. Wall openings (doors and windows):

All rooms have limited amount of space, but having an opening that connects it to an adjacent space whether that space is interior or exterior, increases that space by blending the border that separates between spaces. Windows blend the spaces visually while doors and other walk-through opening blend the functional interaction of that space with the ones next to it.

4. Room arrangement:

This can be taken in several ways; the amount, size and the way the furniture is laid out in the room can mean the difference between a cluttered busy room and a free space. The shape of the room may alter the perception of the space. Having a narrow room can provide a different distance from a person standing in the middle and the wall they are facing than if it was a squarish room. Rooms with irregular shapes can cause problems in the arrangement of the furniture inside causing a quick drainage in the amount of space left.
