In my experience, no one nationality is any more or less likely to be hardworking.  I detest stereotyping people.  I will say that more often than not, the South Africans that I wave worked with and for over the years have been hard working individuals.  I have met exceptions to this however, so I would not generalize the case.

As a South African that has worked in Asia and presently in the Middle East, this is an attribute (hard working), that many companies I've worked for seem to acknowledge.  However, this might be an overstatement or a stereotpe, because I know of some South Africans that will just do enough to put on their hourse and get paid.

At the same time I must say that the rigid Apartheid regime, also inculcated this in the majoriity of the working class, which were mostly non-whites (Coloureds, Indians and Blacks).  They were commited to their task and would do everthing to maintain their jobs.  This was also a time, that companies had a lot of bonuses like housing subsidies, education subsidies for employees and their children, 13th cheque, etc.  So all working South Africans were very motivated, and employment use to very high, making it easy for employees to move from one company to another.

I think an environmental factor, which was the good weather and clean air, also could have had an impact on the work ettiquet one finds among South Africans.  Although recently there has been some drastic changes in the weather patterns.

This is just my personal opinion of my experience in the job market between the 80's and 90's.

I believe hardwork is associated with individuality not nationality, however Africans are nurtured to work for their survival hence they normally carry that mentality forth onto their presentation of work.
