When chlorine is added to water for disinfection purposes, it usually starts reacting with dissolved organic and inorganic compounds in the water. ... Chlorine can react with ammonia (NH3) to chloramines, chemical compounds which contain chlorine, nitrogen (N) and hydrogen (H).

Chlorine as a disinfectant reacts with reducing substances likeferrous salts,or hydrogen sulphide, these will reduce part of chlorine added to chloride ions.If the quantinty of chlorine added is suffiently large to ensure that it is not all reduced or combine,a portion of it will remain free in water. This is termed as Free Residula Chlorine (FRC) and this is the most important for disinfection.

When chlorine reacts chemically it loses its oxidizing power and consequently its disinfecting properties.

Some ammoniacal chlorides however still reain some disinfecting properties.

Chlorine present in the combined form is termed as residual combined chlorine or combined chlorine.

Chlorine reacts with water and forms hydro chloric acid and hydrochloride ion which attacks the lipids on the cell wall of the bacteria and kills it. it is the timing difference in between hydrochloric acid and ion, the acid kills destriys the cell wall with approx 30 minutes while the ion take almost 54 minutes.
