A team cannot be cohesive if communication is ineffective and we hope to achieve for better and other result. Practical examples can you find in my cv. I was in charge of meeting in The Hague where around 5000 people where coming to visit us. It was a big event with a lot of success, and not only in the media.
Recognise and emphasise the benefit of diversity that is unique characteristic of a team. This is important as the different in each team member provides unique benefit to team output - cohesively.
Team cohesion can be brought about by the team leader. If the team leader is well respected and is looked upto by the team members then half the work is done. The team leader must instill a feeling of oneness among the members and try to build a team culture where one is for all and all for one. The team should be run with benevolent authority where performance is appreciated and failures are dealt with positivity, openness and empathy. Once the team realises that the team leader may be a task master but is also prepared to stick his neck out for the team the unit will function with optimum precision and the peers among the group will carry the others along. It is the responsibility of the leader to make the team feel that no matter how good or efficient he may be as a leader ultimately it is the efficiency of the team that matters. Every team member should feel respected and happy to be a part of the team because he is confident that the team is there to back him up during crisis and appreciate and acknowledge the achievements. Once this team bonding is complete there will be total cohesion in the team.
By not making the work routine and work in the field of work as family members and give the team goals and working on them and reward if they achieve those goals and be a hand in the hands of the business because the leader is leading the team from the front and the manager is the one who gives orders from the back.
The first and most important thing in binding a team together is motivation. Motivation comes from making each and every member of a team feel and realize his sense of responsibility and how a common goal to be achieved as a team and how they will be benifited in achieveing the Goal in their role, in the company and their personal career. The team has to be given a Group Target with clear presentation of facts on the market potential, competitor's share in the market and the region that their company can play. Then the group need to be asked how much target each individual wants to take and also let them decide on the territory they want to work or decide their territories on the basis of a draw or lottery to avoid any complain on partiality in deciding territories. On receiving the spoken out target by each individual the team leader or management need to ensure that they help the team members by all means to achieve their individual target. Finally on achievement of target there has to be common award declared for the whole group. Also while setting the target if a healthy competition is set by declaring special reward for the first three achievers other than the consolation reward and also make it clear that these top reward will only be rendered when the group target is achieved. Training and mentoring programs need to be rendered to enrich each individual's skills. I say this on perspective of a Sales team. For other teams as a development or a production eam, a logistics team, a finance team can be taken through the same process with alterations in the target depending on the KRA of each division. Just as often during an interview a potential employee is asked about his/her short and long terms goals, similarly an organization needs to clearly put forward a career path for their employees, which a serious employee is most interested in. Also, to succeed as a company it needs to be ensured that all divisions are in sync and in co-ordination otherwise the common inter-departmental blame games may hamper the overall objective of the Company.
All starts with few simple steps:
1-establising a mission.
2- diversity in team.
3-commuication among each other.
4-feedback after each step by giving and asking.
5-team work and team work .
6-omitting conflict resolution.
