R software is much better than the other software, easy to learn and work with.
SPSS is widely used for social science, humanities,...
while R software is really specified for statistics itself.

I like SPSS, now IBM BI, In a study conducted by SMI, I found SPSS more user friendly and far more Business relevant especially it's Clementine BI.

In my experience STATA is very "fussy" especially if you write your own code.
I would prefer R and SAS .
As they perform very well and are taught in statistics departments around the world.
Minitab is great for business processes and commercial use.
Hope this helped.

It depends on3 criterias:

1- Big data handling (using SAS or STATA is the best choise)

2- Fild of use (R is pretty god in research, SAS in Clinical trials)

3- Price (R is opensource; no price, SAS, SPSS and STATA are pretty expensive)

I've used SPSS throughout my research projects at university and since i'm aware of its application and interpretation of data, i find it most convinient and broad in statistical analysis.

SPSS is all you need if you can minimize complex data management and if you are not going to do cutting edge statistical analysis. If you only open a statistical program twice a month, SPSS has clear advantages because it is so much like the familiar Excel spreadsheet.”

“Stata is your choice if you want to do cutting edge research but do not have the data management needs that require SAS. Stata is ideal for people who are developing or modifying statistical procedures

SPSS…is reasonably strong on ANOVA-related procedures. Looking to the future, it is fair to say that it will be the weakest of the three packages in the scope of statistical procedures it offers…An advantage of SPSS over SAS is that SPSS largely abandoned its mainframe version and revised its syntax to be consistent with a single user…Although all three have a menu-driven option, the point and click menus in SPSS are the easiest to learn…Like SAS, SPSS’s vision has moved away from an academic research focus…SPSS seems to invest more of its development in marketing-oriented graphics that no academic journal would publish than it invests in developing new procedures for data analysis
