IT Certifications are definitely worth it, however, managing and keeping Certifications Valid could be a life long process. They do seem to add value to your marketability, but shouldnt be relied upon for higher Managerial Positions. In my humble opinion, Higher Education Degree Counts more towards being selected for a Managerial / Upper Management Position than an IT Certification.

I believe that any certificate is not worthy without experience and actual practice because the experience is what makes the person a certified professional not passing a certificate exam.

It may attract the employers, but once the candidate goes to an interview , the interviewer can tell if the candidate  have experience or not.

In my opinion, the most important is the knowledge and experience, so i think it is just an acknowledgment for the recruiters but not the technical managers.

The question has to be viewed and answered in different perspectives:

1.  There are employers who think that having certification means a candidate knows each and every thing about a particular field.  They think that having a certified person is panacea to each and every issue that they might have been facing.

2.  A candidate, in my view like to have certification because of the above reason.  I've seen many cerified persons who don't have any practical exposure and have never worked on any physical device or having gone through the pain that we face in practical life while facing critical issues.

I asked the same question to my Regional Director (Alberg Tsang) when I moved into IT in1997-98.  On this he told us (me and my boss) story of his secretary.  He told that the secretary did MCSE in those day (Windows NT4) and joined an organization as a consultant :-).  He laughed at it and told me he don't want me to have certification but to deliver on what I've been supposed to.

From training and knowledge point of view, attending certification level trainings make huge difference.  I've gone many such tranings (CCNA, CCNP, MCSE, Security etc.) but have never tried or sit in certification exams.

So, now it's up to you.  However, seeing the trend, I recommend to have certification for everyone who can afford it.  If a person has both the experience and certification as well, he has more chance than the one one who has not certification.

Certification refers to the confirmation of certain characteristics of an object, person, or organization. - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certification

Professional certificationtrade certification, or professional designation, often called simply certification or qualification, is a designation earned by a person to assure qualification to perform a job or task. - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_certification

Therefore to get legitimate is worth it and it also makes your profile stand out.

Now if anybody wana compare it to Higher education i'd rather say there is no comparison because scope for both is entirely diffrent.

Certification focuses on a technology,

while Higher education enables you to invent technologies.

at the beginning of career, IT certificate is very important as it increase chances to find a job, as well it compansate lack of experince to a certian level and companies usually appreciate it

after adding some years of experince, the certificate value get less, and the persons who want to evolve in their career will find themselves need to build knowledge in a lot of areas beside their IT certificates, actually areas that are not IT at all
