Marketing starts from identyfing the needs of the customer , to designing the product , promoting the product and focuses on customer satisfaction.
Business development is part of marketing if the organisation has done good research it will come to know which markets to targets who are the potential customers etc. No one can go directly into the market without proper research and marketing makes it easy and possible to know what startegies to develop inorder to achieve the goals.
So In my view they are not the two sides of the same coin. As Marketing covers lots of concepts and sales and business development are just a part of it.
Business development & marketing is interlink with each other , work like a chain. for business development you need coordination with marketing department who directly linked with customers. to know the demand of customer you developed your product on the basis of SWOT analyisis.
