Nokia failed because they made the wrong bet, they went with Microsoft and choose to make only Windows Phone devices in a time where open sources software was about to get it's chunk of the cake, companies like HTC, Samsung and LG waited and make the right decision, where was Samsung in the Smartphone business5 years ago? And where was Nokia in the phones business5 years ago? The table has turn, didn't it?

They chose to play it safe and see what happens, their marketing, R&D and management participated in this decision, it's not Marketing to blame alone here, The company lost pretty much all of it's youngsters and early adapters as they went on for other companies that offered better operating systems and more powerful hardware, people love new things and Nokia waited for quite a while to release it's first Windows Phone device (The delay was from Microsoft because it wasn't a finished OS -because they started working on it after Android and iOS pretty much had over50% of the market share- so it was an unpolished, half mature product that was rushed into the market) and by the time that device got to the market, the stage that other operating systems and devices has reached was just astonishing and too hard for Nokia to catch up with, and at the time, Nokia was competing against an army of manufacturers who gained quite a large following and truly got the hearts of their fans.

Then they started firing people and the company was about to collapse, Microsoft stepped in and bought the company in a desperate move to try and bring life back to the -once upon a time was a dominator- company, but it was too late and Android and iOS hot their teeth deep inside the market with over98% domination.

That my friend, is the story of Nokia.

Here's a detailed post I wrote last year about Nokia's failure.
