Why do we use routing protocols? What's the difference between static and dynamic routes?

We use routing protocols if we have a big network to remove the headach of configuring static routes, something else, when we configure static routes to remote networks and there are many routers (hops) in between, we can't determine which route is the best one, but routing protocols can determine the best route based on the metrics.
