Volatile memory means that the memory will lose its contents of data in case of source power shutdown, non-volatile memory means that the memory will not lose its contents because it has an attached battery to supply power in case of main power shutdown and the contents will not be lost for the time the battery can feed the memory untill it is totally discharged, and when the source power start again, the battery will keep charging.
