There are many software:

• GIS
• Land desktop
• civi3D
• Geomatica
• ERDAS Imagine
• Dlta
• laser scan

I think , the most important software in engineering is our brain! =)

Programs like GIS or gvSIG are very interesting

i agreed with maria. The most inportant software in surveying Engineering is Your brain.

actullally it is a large field.you cant complete your any assignement form A to z with one software.

at the different steps you need different type of software.

e.g

the types of softwares 

1.instrument operating and data downloading and uploading softwares.(skipro , geo office ,12 d , survey office etc)

2.Data managing and drawing software (GIS , Autocad ,microstation etc)

3.Some time you need photo interpretting software if you are working with photos.

4. image software if you are using images got by remotesensing  (Erdas)

for site surveying total station is very important soft and hardware also Cad companion software which help you for:

annotate lines and curves

creat line and curve tables

familiar with aotucad drawing

(GIS ,solidworks ,Autocad ,microstation etc)

and anther software (lps,autocad civil3 d,mathcad,liscad).this field will have improved and  stell improved 

according to myinformation total station

most important software is our brain. Technology name all the software that are available and evolve from time to time is just a tool to process the given task.
