Have you ever used BaseCamp as a project management and team management tool? what are the advantages and disadvantages you faced?

Basecamp is fine for distributed teams and its licencing can be very cost effective however it's more of a project management tool than for an enterprise distributed team management tool.  To be fair, that's what's written on the box.

For small companies, it's an excellent option.

I recently had a client that insisted upon running the entire business through Basecamp. It was a massive over extension of what the tool was designed for -- project management.
