Do you think Six sigma is still relevant today?

We know Six sigma has given immense profits and competitive advantage many large companies like GE, Allied signal, Motorola (in their days), etc. But, Not even companies of medium to larger size also are not adopting Six sigma, when this can benefit.

Hi Hussein,

May be as you say, the expertize needed (in the form of experts) could be the reason why this is not becoming familiar......It is interesting.

I think Six sigma is still relevant today (see business definition)

Business Definition

A break through strategy to significantly improve customer satisfaction and shareholder value by reducing variability in every aspect of business

Yes, six sigma has advantags which added to project management like

Six Sigma adds additional dimensions to project management:

  • Powerful set of process improvement steps and tools.

  • Statistical and process thinking, to understand and improve results.

  • Understanding of variation, to reduce knee-jerk reactions.

  • Quantitative analysis, to base decisions on facts and data.

The above items could help more to control and analyze project .

Six Sigma will continue to be useful for routine processes which are predictable and repeatable. However, complex unpredictable work, such as problem solving, and disaster response, will never see the benefit of Six Sigma because they inherently are not styles of work that can be perfected in that manner.

If you are seeing dissatisfaction with Six Sigma, I think it is because people are trying to apply it to complex work where it can't work. That is not a problem with the method, it is a problem with the people applying the method.

I believe that six sigma is still relevant. I think its lack of use is due to the fact that it is presentation to decision makers rarely have clear ROI calculations. Anothe obstacle, I would say, is the narrow spread of the technical background which leads to small (supply) numbers of experts (like your self) which again leads to high costs.

Let me answer with a counter question

' Is it relevant to continue to generate errors in your process and still manage your business profitably ? '

If your answer is No, then you may be in the minority.

The obvious answer is Yes Yes Yes - I want to reduce errors and retain my customers and grow profitably.  Perhaps the process is lengthy, however the analysis provides valueable outputs.

May still be valid.

i think six sigma is relevent , it does not matter with the scale of the industy (big or small), its the management and the top mangement of an organization who need to work in this direction , they should hire some experts ,make the employes awake about six sigma :- needs ,benefits make as may as green belt holders  .Its not only the job of black belt or master balck belt , its about the whole organization . If ur talking about GE or Motorola atleast80% -85% of employes are green or white belt.

As a concept to improve organisations, and have the least amounts of defects and unconformaties, yes, I believe Six Sigma will be having more relevance in the future, with more businesses identifying their success by the quality of their products/services, probably there will be some new theories related to this, or to use the hybrid Lean Six Sigma, but I agree on the quality step up concept, and believe it will stay as an identifier to success for critical businesses (think aviation and aerospace, and healthcare, and the effect of a defect on people)
