Why did we use -48 v Dc in telecommunication filed?

there are many possible reasons..

1. To prevent the outside equipment from lightning, because clouds are negativly charged at bottom. If telecom equipment is positive then clouds will choose antenna to discharge.

2. All telephony and landline equipment and wiring is made up of copper.... to avoid errosion and rusting.. they use negative potential...
