In the context of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, what is the significance of self actualization?

Self actualization lies at the top of the pyramid, does that mean it only motivates a few or else does it mean that those motivated from self actualization have their other lower end needs already fulfilled? Please reply especially the scholars.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is not aimed at any section of the pyramid but merely demonstrate that WE ARE ALL needs junkies. there is always something more that we want.

Once we have satisfied one level of need, we find there is something more that we want, example; as children we want a push bike, then we want a motorbike, then a car, to keep up with colleagues we graduate to sport car, then a private JET to keep up with other CEOs and finally we need our own personal jumbo jet.

We laugh at anyone left on their push bike. The process also called Hedonic adaptation, we adjust to higher standard of living more easily than we can adjust down.
