ping is a command that sends an ICMP echo packet to an IP address.

it is named after the action of sending a short SONAR burst to look for submarines. this is called a ping.

an ICMP echo packet is returned by the destination address if and when it is received.

because a) ICMP is an unreliable protocol (no error correction) and b) because some people disable it (in the name of security) - there is no guarantee that NOT receiving a response means that the far end is down. but if it is received it means that the far is is reachable and is at least running an IP stack.
