Albert Einstein, in his theory of special relativity, determined that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers, and he showed that the speed of light within a vacuum is the same no matter the speed at which an observer travels.

The theory of special relativity states that:

1) The laws of physics are the same for all observers in uniform motion relative to one another.

2) The speed of light in a vacuum is independent of the motion of all observers or of the motion of the source of light.

And the theory of general relativity states that massive objects cause a distortion in the space-time continuum, which is felt as gravity.
