The most significant diffrence is that git works upon a local repository (decentralised) whereas subversion is developed for a server side solution (centralised). With Git you copy the whole repository of a project to your local sytem still having the full range of version control capabilities even if you are disconnected from the server. Therefore Git is much more suitable for Projects which members are working "On the road". As soon they are reconnectd to the server they may merge their local repository into the serverside master.
